You’ll still complete supervised fieldwork and pass the exam.

  • Pathway 2: Behavior-Analytic Coursework: If you don’t attend an accredited/recognized degree program, you can qualify by completing specified graduate-level ABA coursework plus fieldwork and the exam. Historically, programs proved this via a Verified Course Sequence (VCS), or—until the end of 2025—via non-VCS attestation/course-by-course review. Starting January 1, 2026, the non-VCS option sunsets; programs must designate a Pathway 2 Program Contact to attest your coursework.

  • ABAI-accredited or recognized programs (Tiers 1, 2a, or 2b), or

  • APBA-accredited programs (the BACB recognizes APBA accreditation alongside ABAI).

Choosing this route means your degree and coursework requirements are bundled: the program’s accreditation/recognition assures the BACB that your curriculum meets current standards.

  • Candidates who want to avoid the admin of proving content hours course-by-course.


What to confirm before you commit

Pathway 2: Behavior-Analytic Coursework: VCS vs. Non-VCS

Pathway 2 is flexible, but the verification details matter.


VCS (Verified Course Sequence): the classic Pathway 2

Many universities offer a VCS that maps directly onto the BACB’s coursework requirements (content areas + minimum hours). Historically, your program’s VCS Coordinator could attest that you completed the right courses. As of 2025, ABAI continues to publish a VCS directory, and the BACB still uses VCS information to evaluate applications.


Pros:

  • Clear mapping of courses to required content hours

  • A known process for BACB evaluation

  • Often paired with faculty who know the certification process well


Watch-outs:

  • Sunset details: ABAI has communicated changes to the VCS system over 2025. Existing sequences remain relevant for verifying coursework, but new VCS applications are no longer being accepted by ABAI. If your program already has a VCS, great—confirm it will cover your completion date and that the school will attest your coursework under the current rules.


Non-VCS (course-by-course or department attestation): ending after 2025

Through December 31, 2025, applicants could meet Pathway 2 using non-VCS coursework via:

  • Course-by-course review using ABAI’s records, and/or

  • A Nonverified Course Content Attestation from the department chair when courses weren’t in the database.

After January 1, 2026, the BACB no longer accepts non-verified coursework in BCBA applications. Instead, schools must have a Pathway 2 Program Contact who attests you completed required content hours.


If you’ll apply in 2026 or later, confirm today that your university has (or will have) a Pathway 2 Program Contact and that your courses line up with the current content-hour table.


The Coursework: What Must Be Covered and How It’s Verified


Content areas and hours

Under current requirements (2025), Pathway 2 coursework totals 315 instructional hours across:

  • Ethics/code enforcement & professionalism

  • Concepts & principles (with a freestanding course)

  • Measurement, data display & interpretation, experimental design (freestanding course)

  • Behavior assessment

  • Behavior-change procedures; selecting/implementing interventions

  • Personnel supervision & management

Freestanding courses mean the majority of content in that class is devoted to the named area (e.g., concepts & principles).


How your coursework is documented

  • Before 1/1/2026: VCS Coordinator attestation or course-by-course review (with non-VCS attestation if needed).

  • On/after 1/1/2026: The institution must have a Pathway 2 Program Contact who completes a Pathway 2 Coursework Attestation. Transcripts are still required.


Choosing between programs

If you’re torn between two universities:

  • Pick the one that can guarantee attestation for your timeline (especially if you’ll apply in 2026+).

  • Examine faculty depth in your areas of interest (early learners, severe behavior, schools, OBM).

  • Ask how they support exam readiness and source fieldwork.



Fieldwork Requirements: The Same Destination Either Way

Regardless of Pathway 1 or 2, you must complete supervised fieldwork that meets BACB rules on:

  • Total hours: Supervised Fieldwork (2,000) or Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork (1,500).

  • Supervision dosage per period: 5% (supervised) or 10% (concentrated) in 2025; note the 2027 change to 7.5% for concentrated under the new framework.

  • Restricted vs. unrestricted: At least 60% of total fieldwork must be unrestricted activities (assessment, analysis, training, documentation, etc.); no more than 40% can be restricted (direct implementation).

  • Observation: Your supervisor must observe you with a client regularly.

  • Balance of individual/group: Group supervision cannot exceed 50% of supervised minutes.

  • Period caps: Minimum and maximum hours per supervisory period keep progress realistic and protect quality.

Pro tip: Book observation early in each period—don’t wait until the last week. Late observation is one of the most common reasons candidates lose hours at audit.


2027 Changes: Plan Now if You’ll Apply Late 2026–2027

The BACB published a 2027 requirements package to reduce confusion and modernize coursework structure and fieldwork math. Key highlights you should plan around:

  • Pathways collapse to two (Pathway 1: accredited/recognized degree; Pathway 2: coursework + degree).

  • Concentrated supervision adjusts to 7.5% per period under the 2027 framework.

  • The coursework table is updated and reorganized (still freestanding courses in key areas).

  • Administrative processes emphasize institution attestation for Pathway 2.

If your hours or coursework straddle 2026–2027, keep your logs/forms cleanly labeled by the rules in effect when you earned them. For fieldwork, many supervisors recommend a simple “dual-track” approach in late 2026: fill your normal verification forms and a 2027-preview calculator so you’re covered no matter which eligibility version you apply under.

Electronic signatures are allowed when they meet the BACB’s definition. Make sure everyone (you, supervisors, registrars) uses legible, date-stamped signatures consistent with BACB policy. If a site’s e-sig is quirky, include a quick memo explaining the platform and signer identity.

  1. Missing supervision minutes for a period → Those hours usually don’t count.

  2. Group > 50% of supervised minutes → Rebalance with an individual session this period.

Fieldwork Strategy: Turn Hours Into Competence


Build your rotation

Mix settings (home, clinic, school), ages, and case functions. Ensure you get reps in:

  • Assessment (records review → preference → descriptive → FA where appropriate)

  • Goal writing (operational definitions, criteria, generalization targets)

  • Intervention (function-based procedures; prompting/fading; schedule thinning)

  • Caregiver/RBT training (model → practice → feedback; treatment integrity checks)

  • Data work (graphing, visual analysis, decision notes)


Supervision that teaches decision-making

Bring a short agenda to each contact: what changed, what the data show, and one decision you propose. Your supervisor’s job is to refine your analysis—not just your procedures.


Exam Eligibility Where Pathways Converge

No matter your pathway, you’ll apply to the BACB once:

  • Your degree is conferred,

  • Your coursework is verified (via Pathway 1 or Pathway 2 attestation), and

  • Your fieldwork is complete and properly documented.

Budgeting the Journey: Time and Money

  • Tuition: varies widely; accredited programs can be more expensive but reduce admin friction later.

FAQs


Is Pathway 1 “better” than Pathway 2?

Neither is universally better. Pathway 1 bundles degree + coursework with recognized oversight—less admin, more guardrails. Pathway 2 gives flexibility if you don’t have access to an eligible degree program—just be sure your school can attest coursework for your application year.


I have older graduate credits—will they count?

Coursework has recency and content rules. If your credits are aging out or don’t meet new content allocations (e.g., required freestanding courses), you may need top-up classes. Confirm with your program well before you apply.


Can I mix fieldwork types?

Yes—across supervisory periods, not within a period. Track supervision percentages carefully and keep observation minutes and individual/group ratios within limits.
